PEN HISTORY
First time the rouble was mentioned in the birchbark manuscript of Velikiy Novgorod (1281-1299). In the thirteenth century on the territory of Kievan Rus people used silver ingots weighing about two hundred grams as money. They were called the hryvnia. Such a big coin was not a very convenient tool for calculations, so people decided to cut it into parts, which were called roubles.
